I've been using a small 1 meter square container to try and grow peas over the past couple of years but each time they only grow about 30cm high and I only get a few pods on them. Is the contianer too small or is it something else?

    Happy New Year everyone!

container should be big enough depending how many your sowing. some varities are naturall squat, or could be water a good tip for sweet peas is to put a few layers of newspaper burried in the compost half way up the pot to hold moisture might help.

Many thanks for the replies. The container is only about a metre deep and the pea is the Kelvedon Wonder.

could be a number of things .....keeping containers of copost evenly moist is difficult if you start them in that big pot they could be drying a little at an early crucial stage.....what is the growing medium some multi purpose compost alone can be rich a mix of compost and topsoil might be good easier to keep moist too. Are they in a warm sheltered spot peas wont öike a cool wind or shade?
My guess is a moisture issue

No they shouldnt grow like a runner bean, only 60-80 cm tall.
    Container sounds deep enough.
Make sure you have enough room for one plant, leave 20 cm between the plants. And i mix in lots of ordinary garden soil to the container. Best some home made compost as well. I think thats where you could be going wrong, as the rhizobium bacterias could not be active if you grow them in a bought bag of compost only!? Here is a study, read on http://www.microbiologyonline.org.uk/forms/rhizobium.pdf

    good luck

I just use common everyday multi purpose compost and they arent in the sun for very long during the day. They maybe only get about 2 -3 of direct sunlight each day

Kelvedon Wonder need support, are you using twiggy sticks for them to grow up?
Also have you got drainage holes in your container? You need to keep the compost moist but not waterlogged.

Thanks for the reply. I place canes next for them to climb and there are drainage holes in the container
