Can anyone help with a pear tree problem. I have a pear tree around 5 years old. It has fruited for the last two years but only about 3 or 4 fruits, although good size and very tasty. Last year I got quite a lot of tiny black insects on the leaves followed by leaf curl. This year I have mysterious orange dots on the leaves (see photo)
    1. What are they?
    2. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive spraying regime, and when??
    3. I believe it's a standard tree, not a bush one. It is around 6ft high at the moment. Is it OK to keep cutting the top of the main stem to encourage side shooting, fruit bearing branches?? Is this the way to do it as I don't want the tree getting to more than about 8-10 ft.

    Any advice appreciated

Um... no photo! But if it's like my pear tree then it could be a minor bit of rust. I usually take the leaves off and burn them.
You can only trim the main stem once as next time it will be new shoots (I'm being pedantic) but I can't see why not. Make sure you're chopping the right ones though as this may be the reason for so few fruits!
Black insects will have been sap sucking but nothing to really worry about.
