What a great forum, nice to have such a handy and helpful resource!

Second question - there's an old Pear tree in my garden, probably around 50ft high, which is on it's last legs. A badly placed junk heap put under it years ago means Ivy has taken a hold. BADLY. The tree hasn't had any new growth for the past ten years, it's flowering out of old branches and each years its own leaves seem to get less and less in number while the Ivy takes over. I tried to take a cutting last year (usually plop it in a bit of water in a shot glass) but it didn't take. Any tips on saving this old thing before even more of it falls down?
