Well I'm no expert, but from those shots it looks like some type of insect, or maybe spider, has used you tree as a nursery for it's eggs, which is what I'd guess the little black dots in the left hand picture are.

A lot of web doesn't necessarily mean a *huge* spider, I reckon the hosepipe plan is a good one, unless you have a problem with killing insect eggs?
If it is just a spider then it's probably not going to do your tree any harm in the long run, but if it's some sort of insect whos young eat pear trees you probably want to get that stuff off ASAP!

Hi Pr I have removed the offending Branch and have put it in a safe warm place so that they can Hatch out and then I will find out what they are, that way I will have learnt something new which may be useful in the future:)
The Huge Spider was was just my sense of Humour as for the Hosepipe Method I have my own Hosepipe Ban :DIf they were bigger eggs I would have made an omelette with them:D:)

When they do hatch I think I would probably choose to be somewhere else either way.

A bit like the progeny of Ungoliant perhaps!

If you can get a pic of whatever does come out share it so i know

    a) what it is

    b) you still have arms and legs left afterwards.

PS you never did get back to me with those rose books i asked about, you!
