    Hi folks.

Following advice from 'Dai', I sowed some peas, Kelvedon Wonder. I happened to be watching something on tv which which intimated that pigeons are a pest regarding peas. What I'd like to know is, is it the foliage or the peas/pods themselves that are at risk ?

    Cheers...Freddy.

They go for the young pea plants, so you need to net against them otherwise they will peck up the shoots as they emerge. Once the plants get big enough the pigeons leave them alone (i.e. they don't go for the pods)

The other big pea pest is mice, they burrow under the soil and eat the seed before they germinate.

Both of those problems can be avoided by sowing your pea seeds in cell trays before planting out to their final positions.

Hi JWK, thanks for that. I'd already thought of mice, so with that in mind I sowed some in pots, to fill in any gaps. but there aren't any :) First thing tomorrow I'll put up some netting (Enviromesh) to keep the blighters off.

        Cheers...Freddy.
