I'm thinking of growing some peas this year, simply to give a bit more diversity to my crop (that, and its looking unlikely that I will manage potatoes this year) - but I don't have a clue about picking the right variety, sowing them, growing them, or even harvesting and storing them.

    All advice welcome, please :)

I was thinking of putting them against the fence over by the greenhouse - partial shade, does that sound sensible? If you've got any spare, that would be lovely Kaz :blue thumb: - I really must try and get collecting seeds this year so I can return the favour at some point :oopss:

I was going to try growing potatoes in bags this year, but to be honest I'm not sure that they aren't going to cost a lot more than their produce would (if you know what I mean) - potato bags are £15 for three from T&M, and then they would want filling with soil/compost, so they are starting to look expensive.

Are peas easy to store (freeze?)

There are basically three ways to store peas.
1 - Let them dry on the vine and then shell and store in airtight containers.
      2- Freeze them
3 - Use a dehydrator to dry them and then store in airtight containers, self-seal sandwich/freezer bags are ideal.

We use the latter method and they keep for at least two or three years.

BTW - I got a couple of potato grow sacks from a Pound Shop last year and while they may not have been a pound they weren't much more.

Thanks Dave - freezing them would be our most likely option; do they go mushy when defrosted, or do they keep relatively well?

If you shell them, blanch them and then freeze them they are nearly as good as fresh.

          Cheers :)

I think they have got to be worth a punt then, as much to get as much of our own produce being used throughout the year as anything.

Peas never make it into the house here. They get eaten before they get that far..........!

Home frozen is pretty much the same as supermarket frozen.

dunno what sort of bags you're after exactly but can't you pop into your local chippy and get em to save you some? or are those thick papery bags only good for storing potatoes in?

Or just get a bag of compost and use the bag it comes in? I read somewhere the other week about someone using black bin bags doubled up for growing potatoes, that'd be alot cheaper than forking out 15 quid
