Why can we not get peat based compost easily. I suspect that this is the Climate Change Police again. Peat has been cut for fuel and fertilizers for at least hundreds and possibly thousands of years, now suddenly we are ruining our environment by using it. This just does not make sense. And before the climate change lobby get at me again, I will say that I am probably keener than they are to save the planet, but believe that nature is doing a damn site better job than all the dogooders.

MMM mmm. its a sticky issue.

In some ways I understand the problem, peat will eventually run out and it does seem a waste to use something thats taken thousands of years to form just to grow plants in, when there are alternatives.

I'm thinking the Norfolk Broads would look very different if it wasn't for peat digging.

    Big, big questions there Maltaron.
I agree things grow better in peat based composts.
I've tried the peat free stuff and it was disastrous.
So why should we not use the peat based stuff - it would take pages to discuss the argument.
Look at it for yourself and decide.

    .

Question Time, with no prizes for correct answer!

Would anyone like to hazard a guess what "University of California loamless compost" is?
