I've never bothered with peat pots, I cant see the point.

And I've grown some very tricky things in the past, you need to keep them constantly wet otherwise the pot dries out and any root touching or going through the pot dies.
    :(
So unless its something that is very strong growing, or something that enjoys being very wet, in my book they are a waste of money.

I thinks Pete's hit the nail on the head when he suggests your failures are due to drying out.
When I use peat pots, or loo rolls for that matter, I stand them in a tray with a layer of compost on the bottom and this helps reduce the speed at which they dry out.
Another thing to remember with plants in peat pots is that when you plant out the plants (and pots) to ensure the rim of the peat is below soil level, otherwise the exposed rim tends to wick away the moisture.

I don't bother with them either for the very same reasons Dave & Pete say... Funny how we all think they are the things to use, when actually their use is very limited I think.. I just use ordinary small pos

I tried those peat pots too Natty and they were awful. Just like you the seedlings just died.
They dried out every 5 minutes and it seemed impossible to keep them damp.
I transplanted the seedlings into plastic pots and threw the peat pots on the compost heap.

I had the opposite problem with them and loo rolls-I was so careful to prevent drying out that they ended up being continuously damp-so a lot of my seedlings damped off. Now I use polystyrene or plastic seed cells, less seed faliures and it panders to my sense of stinginess-I use a lot less seeds.
