Hi guys. I've a mature cherry tree that the bark has split and is peeling. It's the full length of the trunk.

Anyone know the cause? Can this be rectified or is the tree doomed. It's over 40 years old.

    All help appreciated

I have a Tibetan Cherry and one of its features is the fact the bark splits and curls.

I was so worried. Is there any way to identify the Tibetan cherry?

Are we referring to a split bark right back to the wood or just the surface flaking off.

It does look a bit diseased, but if the tree is still doing ok i don't think you need to worry to much.
It could well be on its way out in the next few years, or it could go on for years to come.

Often you get gum coming out, but it looks ok.
Either way I don't think there is much you can do about it.

Unfortunately we all get old, but don't give up on the tree just yet.
If you start seeing bracket type fungus coming out of the trunk it will mean it's on the way out.

Should this happen do you advise removing the whole tree

              Well, if it dies, yes.
But all the time it's still growing and fruiting ok I'd leave it alone.
