IMG_8463.JPG have I left this too late to cut back? Thought maybe of taking a few cuttings and trimming back as there are some new shoots. Looks bad at the minute. Any thoughts? :)

Not too late. I usually do mine in April but have done it as late as November & it's been fine :)

Hmm that is very overgrown.. I think I would take some cuttings, they usually take very easily, then cut it right back.. I don't have one at the moment but have had several in the past.. If not too old they will respond with a good cut back in my experience but if old and not been cut back before iffy would be my thoughts, but if cuttings taken then no problem.. Go for it is my motto.. ;) sometimes it works and sometimes not.. Mother Nature is fickle but I like to test the water.... ;)

Thanks both, id grown some cuttings from it last year and planted them today, so going to take some more now and chop it really right back-looks awful.

Turns out there was a nice new clump of fresh growth as well as an old stalky bit (still with some new shoots) so has turned out ok! Just hoping the three cuttings from last year do ok now theyre in the garden-they had a good root ball on them so fingers crossed :)
