    Help!

I bought some Pentland Javelin seed potatoes for my first attempt at growing potatoes. No idea if they are a good choice, they were just the ones that had every box ticked on the label (baking, boiling etc). I eat a LOT of potatoes so I wanted an all-rounder.

They say first earlies so I guess I should be chitting them now?

Beyond that, I am clueless. I have a couple of old 50L plastic bins I can grow them in, or I can use pots, or I have a 70L metal bin, or plastic potato bags, or tyres... which would be best?

Also, do I need to do the earthing up thing or can I just fill the container, put them and just keep watering? When do I harvest? What does first/second early/main crop even mean?!?

Yep, total newbie to this :snorky: Last year I was going to do veg and I think I probably posted about it but it never happened, this year I am absolutely determined!

I depends on where you live/plant as to when you plant (due to frosts been over) frost will kill your crop if above ground

Your earlies should be chitted starting now and planted early April

    Roughly
Early take 16 weeks to grow
second early 18 weeks to grow
and Main 20 or so weeks to grow

The bigger the bin litres the more potatoes, though growing in containers you need to keep watering sufficiently
You should allow one square foot around each potato, ie two or three in the bin, not ten or so as you would not give them room to grow so would not gain anything

As far as I am aware you can either plant deep and fill to the top, or myself I would cover and top up as they grew

One of our experts will answer you soon, I am just trying to help

    Good luck, and happy chips
