Lots of conflicting information about what type of growing medium to use in pots has anyone got any recommendations what to use.

Been told to use a top soil with vermiculite instead of a commercial container mix would this be suitable.

@tangham You can successfully grow and flower peonies in pots. I have.. Plant in a 12 ins pot with adequate drainage holes at the base. It is best to use a soil based compost yes, use John Innes No3. As is the best growing medium for them as they do not thrive in peat-based composts. Do not overwater them and preferably keep a bit on the dry side. I also mulch on the top so the soil doesn’t dry out so quickly.. After a few years, plant them in the garden if you can where they will thrive better.
    I hope that helps..

I have a couple in 20l pots and used general multi purpose with added sand.
They did not flower for the 1st 3-4 years so gave up on them. I neglected them and of course as the top of the pot soil became eroded and disappeared, the more the corm was exposed, and hey presto......flowers for the past 2 years :) I didn`t know I`d planted them too deep.

So I would say planting depth is more important than the soil.
