    Hi,

I recently purchased a herbaceous peony from a local nursey. I have a few peonies in borders but have bought this to go in a large pot. I have noticed that there are already multiple root buds coming up through the soil - is this normal for October? Do you think based on the picture it is too shallow? Any tips on potting a peony are much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello Alf
From the picture can't see how deep the pot is. It's normal to see buds like that at this time of year, it shouldn't grow anymore as long as it's outside.
I haven't grown them in pots so i wouldn't know how to look after them.

Personally, I would cover the tubers with compost. There looks room in the pot.

Thanks Logan. It’s not terribly big, just a few litres:

I would pot it up in the pot you intend to use, which I assume is much bigger.

I think that the pot will be too small, you could pot it on in the spring or now if it's getting too big. I agree with @Jocko you could cover it more with compost but leave a bit of room for watering.

Try not to disturb the roots. Partly fill the pot, tip the Peony out and stand it on the surface then fill around it making sure you cover the tubers.
