Sparked by something that Alan Tichmarsh said last Friday night on Gardeners World, I have just learnt something new - that is that most tulips are not truly perennial.

Most are cultivars and only last a couple of years or so, and so a clump of these will die out. But the species or wild tulips will thrive and clumps will survive and increase in size.

This site gives some simple information http://www.theplantexpert.com/springbulbs/TulipIntro.html

The truly perennial ones are in class 15. I am going to get some of these for next year.

Didn't think Alan Titchmarsh presented Gardeners World anymore, isn't it Monty Don now?

My Mistake Lisa - I meant to say Gardener's Year. Comes after Christine's Garden.

I thought Gardener's Year was an excellent program. I especially liked the pruning of Clematis the week before, where time elapse photography showed the effect of two different ways of doing the job. A before and after shot.

Thought Alan Titchmarsh was sticking to Nature programmes, is he back doing gardening, shame, still he's tried Antique programmes, maybe next it will be cooking with Alan, heaven forbid

He does things he enjoys, whether it be gardens or nature or even writing novels - and if he gets paid for them as well - lucky him.

Me I enjoy watching and listening to him enjoy himself, as I did Geoff Hamilton, and do, Monty Donn and Roy Lancaster, and the bonus I learn a bit as well.

I agree with you Fran. Whilst I like Christine herself of Christine's Garden - there isn't much gardening in it.

But you can certainly learn from Alan Tichmarsh - even if there is sometimes a bit too much Tichmarsh.
