As title. I'm after the holy grail of growing conditions for both bananas and cannas as, after many years, I'm coming round to the idea of the right plant for the right place (better late than never, right?) and I have some of both to plant, hopefully I can get away with some in planters.

I need soil type, nutritional needs, light requirements etc

    Mine do well and have:

Shelter, part sun (that's because of the shelter, full sun might be preferable), well drained (I put land drains in - heavy clay here). They get a reasonable amount of water during the Summer (pond alongside into which I dip a bucket and "chuck" it on plants that need water). I pee on the Bananas about once a week - so they get some nitrogen. Lawn fertiliser (without any Weed part) would do - that's "Weed" as in "Herbicide", not as in "past tense of To Wee" :heehee:

Lots of water for both plants. They like a rich compost and are voracious feeders during the growing season. Best in a warm sunny spot in your garden near a wall or a fence. Cannas will be OK in big planters, bananas really need to be in the soil unless you have a very very big planter. Watering is even more crucial in planters, I'd mix in some water retaining crystals and maybe consider an automatic watering system.

Gotcha. So the banana will go in the ground next to the summerhouse in the developing new border. Bit of a hotch potch in there until I decide which plants I like / perform the best. This area gets sun beyond a certain height as it's next to a fence but should be OK based on the above.
Some cannas will go in pots, with a composted manure, water retaining gel, soil and potting compost mix. Remaining cannas... Hmm... I'm sure I'll find somewhere lol

@Kristen Do you pee direct or dilute in watering can? I thought perhaps direct might scorch a bit? Maybe it depends on what you've been eating of course lol Chicken pellets should be another alternative I guess.

I plant with chicken pellets - some in the planting hole below the rootball, some around it when almost backfilled (so that covered by soil, just, rather than on-surface).

When I fertilise "draught" I spread it about a bit - sorry, probably too much information for the ladies already!. I have a bucket under the spout of the IBC nearby and if the plants need water than I combine with water in the bucket and then water from that.

At the moment I am fertilising some new clumps of Bamboo. They are getting a bucket of water a day, but I am fertilising at various times of the day not coinciding with the watering - but the ground is moist.

Never had a problem with fertilising mature-ish plants direct. I did, however, have a Bamboo that I bought in a half-barrel. It sat on the terrace outside the back door all winter, waiting for planting position to be ready the following Spring. In early Spring I pee'd on it every night when I took the dogs out and after a few weeks it definitely was not happy! I doubt that got watered anything like enough though ...
