    Hello all,

I would like to build a pergola to the left of my patio overhanging onto the patio and eventually grow climbing plants that will cover the roof space acting as a weather canopy.

I only want to buy the wood and have a go at building it myself but is there anywhere I can get a set of plans to work from? The four posts are the easy bit but not sure on the fancy roof work

    Cheers Jamie

The roof is quite easy really, bb, depending on what you want to use. You need somethng fairly solid to take the winds, rain, etc. I used 2" X 2" timber I had spare in the garage to build the roof frame and some marine plywood, again spare stuff, for the Gable ends. I used some old pond liner to stretch over the roof to make it water/rain proof and then used the 2" x 2" timber again to make the actual roof cover. I made sure the roof extended about 10 inches beyond the Arbour body to keep off rain off the seat and occupants. The decorative strip on the bottom of the front Gable end was a left over from a kitchen project, while the metal "Green Man" was 50p from a Car Boot sale along with the Spire on the roof.[IMG]

The four posts for the Arbour frame for the body of the Arbour were 4" X 4" set in concrete.

I guess it's all down to the size and style that you might have in mind. Need a plan?, my advice, draw your own

Beam me up Scotty, if you mean a Pergola, bb, then to be honest you don't need plans because it's so easy to do and the hardest part is getting the right plants to suit it.:heehee:

Nah, going to have to disagree with you there, Our Mandy ... the hardest part ....

... is stopping snails, in their thousands, from using the pergola roof beams and plants as a breeding station ;) They adore that lovely, cool, uninterrupted, secluded, shady spot.
Not quite so much fun for anyone relaxing under it with a glass of something tasty ... when ... *plop!* ... you get an unexpected visitor in your glass :eeew:

I remember taking my Wife out to dinner in a really swank Country Restaurant and after when sitting out in the garden with a very nice pint of Beer a bird sitting above me in a tree dropped a present into my pint before I even managed to drink any of it............my Wife nearly choked with laughter at the look on my face.:hate-shocked::gaah::heehee:

            :pathd:

Small consolation but, as it was a swank restaurant, at least you could afford to buy a fresh one ;)
Pity the man who has spent his last penny on a pint and had the same experience :heehee:

Here's a pergola I made. I drew the shaped ends freehand. (If you want fancy ends.)

Dont know if this is of any help, but the RHS have a book called Garden Structures or something similar. There is quite a bit of info in it as regards dimensioning timber and so on. Even a whole pergola project. All you really need to do is decide on the shaped ends.

We're going to make a pergola soon. Just waiting for some decent rain so I can dig the footings out.
