Next season at Max Gate we plan to grow mainly veg that would have been available and likely to be grown during Thomas Hardy's lifetime 1840 - 1928.

I've been making a list of varieties that date from the period along with a few likely species that would be available locally.

Collected some Sea Kale seeds as it's more than likely the forced shoots would have been grown as a delicacy.

Each pod contains a single seed, we only need a few plants for the garden, but i'll grow some on to sell to the public to raise money for the garden too.

Right time of year to collect the seed, before the winter storms have away with them. DSCN1946.JPG

You volunteering?, 50 hours gets you a card for free entry to NT properties, but not their car parks like Cogden.

My daughter got her NT card from volunteering during uni summer hols, I told her to check, but she was advised it didn't cover NT Car Parks (separate to properties), has she been mis-informed?

Hi Zigs, it takes a few years to get anything worthwhile from Sea Kale from seed. I'm on my second year now and they are still on the small side to force come next spring. It looks good in the mean time though :blue thumb:

I've tried some more from seed this year Zigs, a variety called Lily White, it's supposed to be nicer tasting but less hardy. Sown in May but none germinated yet, could duff seed or more patience needed.

AKA Thongs, thought I'd mention both slips and thongs as it might help GC get more Google hits.

@Zigs This year (2017) the NT will be starting to change their car parking machines to ones will will read the QR code on plastic membership cards and issue a ticket to display. Unless volunteer (cardboard) cards are being changed, a NT sticker in the wondow will no longer be enough at carparks with the new machines?

@ Zigs I dont know if this is of any use to you or not, but they grow a lot of varieties from the period at Chilton Foliat in Wiltshire.

At least they did almost 30 years ago!
