Where I work there is a rabbit that comes in and causes damage. I can't shoot it (too close to Public rights of way!), the owners have got a dog but it's too interested in cXXXXXXg on the grass and mumping round the rubbish bins. (Can't persuade them to get a big Tom cat). The damage is very localised. Does anyone Know of anything (scentwise) that might persuade it to look elsewhere? I'm sure this has come up before, but I can't find it on the Search facility.

Thanks daitheplant. I only took on this place last year (Autumn). Everybody is saying how great the grounds look (Actually, it only needed tidying up ;) ) but having introduced exotic stuff(like Fucshias!!, that's serious [IMG] ), I'd rather keep the little Bxxxxxs out of it. I'm beginning to educate the new owners into the vagaries of gardening but it's a struggle. ;)

    Hi Cajary

We live in the same part of the world, although I can almost guarantee I'm further south than you! There are so many rabbits here I'd really appreciate knowing how well the Renardine works. Can you also let me know how it's used? A spray? I have about one acre, so some things may not be practical.

(Can't persuade them to get a big Tom cat)

As someone who cleans up the mess left by people who don't care for animals properly, can I advise against treating one pest by introducing another ( ie an unneutered cat that will go on to reproduce more strays).

Myxomatosis was also one of the nastiest diseases ever introduced leading to a slow, distressing death and it is interesting to note that the pure bred Scottish Wildcat numbers are now dwindling and a link has been made to low rabbit counts.

Don't bother thinking about a cat to scare the rabbits. There are cat's and cat's.
I used to garden for a family who had two small siamese cats, they used to bring young rabbits into the house through the cat door, still live to wander at will.

At the mo, I have two pet rabbits that have the run of the back (was garden now yard). The local cats, (big toms or otherwise) of which there are quite a few get chased out by the English one if they venture over the fence.
I have lots of plants in there, all raised above rabbit height.

    Hi Cajary

Dendodrium has has rabbit problems, and has put up fine fencing to make a barrier. There was a thread last year about it. Can you put up any fencing? It also needs to buried down so they can't tunnel through.
(Where abouts are you on the South Hampshire Coast?? We are down there too!! - and Linlin - IOW??)

Hi guys, thanks for the advice and am in the process of trying to obtain the product. (They've got to order it) I couldn't find anything on the Search facility ( not surprising, I am a Dork on these things) but I knew someone must have put it up before. Fencing isn't an option owing to the layout of the premises. I thought I'd heard at some time that Euphorbium was a deterrent but I might have been imagining it!
Hi H. Bee We live in Lymington and can wave at everyone on I.O.W from Pennington Marshes, a lovely walking area, especially if you're interested in birds

Hi guys, further to the above, it looks like Renardine is now illegal, ( no wonder they didn't have it in stock!!) I'm gonna have to think again

Erm I found this, I know nothing about it but perhaps you ought to read it...

Legal Notice regarding the banning of Renardine:
Renardine was the only legally permitted chemical deterrent which was effective against CATS, DOGS, RABBITS, FOXES, MOLES and BADGERS . As from the 24th March 2006, Renardine has been banned. Importantly, ALL the approvals for Renardine have now expired. This means that:
    * Renardine can no longer be advertised for sale.
    * Renardine can not be bought from any shop, wholesaler, mail order, agricultural supplies merchants, internet or by private sale.
    * Renardine may no longer be supplied, sold, given away or swapped.
    * Renardine may no longer by used.
    * Renardine may no longer be stored (so any stocks you have must be disposed of).
RenCoco ( Renardine- impregnated cocoa shells) has also been banned.
For more information see the PSD's web site at http://www.pesticides.gov.uk/approvals.asp?id=1567
