I have hundreds of snails in my new garden so am very concerned about putting out new plants, I also have two kittens so I don't want to use any killer/deterrent which could harm them I have saved lots of eggs shells to crush and put around new seedlings but is there anything else I can use/do?

I always use beer traps. A dish set in or low on the ground filled with beer or lager (martini is not recommended). They jump in and die happy.

Hi sarraceniac, Monty Don was showing some new slug pellets on GW a few weeks ago and they are organic as in the fact they kill the slugs but dont harm the wildlife. They are about £3.99 and being sold in local GC. I will see if I can find out the name of them for you. ;) 02

Don't bother O2. I use Tesco's cheap beer. I have been using beer traps for years and my father for 60 years before me. Totally organic, totally harmless to other flora and fauna, very cheap and works. Thanks anyway but if it isn't broke I don't fix it.

My slug and snail deterrant this year is two buckets and 50p for every 50 the little darlings can find for me - then I put them in bin for collection.(the slugs, not the little darlings, although it is very, very tempting at times..... ;o) )
I shall let you know if its successful or not!!!

Thanks O2 I hope you didn't think I was being dismissive. It's just that I find beer traps the most effective way of slug/snail control. ;)

The alcohol content doesn't matter. I think it's the yeast they go for and then drown. The cheapest stuff I know is that Tesco c**p. One day I'm going to serve it to my second son when he comes for a barbecue or even dinner. He's the one who took his mother out for lunch on mother's day and headed straight for McDonald's. But he only earns about Ã?£40,000 a year after tax. Do you think he knows why I 'hate' him? [IMG] :D

'Gardening Success' pellets contain an iron compound which is harmless to birds and animals. Slugs disappear to die and do not leave horrid messy corpses. I've tried every method of slug riddance and don't like killing them but this is the best product for years. I think this is the one you mean.

I tried organic slug pellets last year that weren't harmful to the wildlife. I never got a chance to find out if they worked because the pheasants kept eating them the moment I put them down

I have been waiting weeks for my Fritillaria Uva- Vulpus to flower in the greenhouse and just as the flower bud was starting to open than a slug has climbed up the stem and noshed part of the flower   I have had to bring it in to the house now.

I am feeding Fred my hedgehog every night but he doesn't eat the slugs so I am having to resort to pellets or else I will get no spring flowers  :(

Coarse grit sprinkled around works well, This is what I use for my 'organic' customers.
