    Hi all

I have a 4 foot Phoenix palm in the greenhouse at the moment. I brought it in November for £5. It is looking a little sorry for itself. The fronds look like they have wilted and it looks like it has lost some of colour. The root ball is fairly dry. what do I need to bring it back to life?

Hi Mowgley, I have two of the Phoenix Palms which I overwinter in my Kitchen as I wouldn't trust them to a duration in a cold Green House in the Winter. I think it's just a case of Winter blues and the cold. You won't be able to turn it around overnight but I would recommend watering with a weak feed, to begin with, using with it tepid water. Keep up a fortnightly feed and if you can find it.....a warmer place!

I might be wrong but that looks more like dactylifera rather than canariensis to me.

Yes it looks very dry, I'd go careful with the watering until things actually warm up reliably.
Be good if you could move it to warmer conditions for a few weeks.

Looking again and noting you bought it in November, I'm thinking it might be a very drawn and forced canariensis, that has not taken kindly to the low winter temps.

        :ThankYou: for the replies
I have 2 other palms in the greenhouse as well and they are smaller but look perfectly healthy
Will water with tepid water and a feed
Was going to plant it in my new front garden.
Would it do better in the ground or pot?

Hi Mowgley, I would leave it in the pot unless you live in a very mild spot. Since it's showing what appears to be distress from being in the cold I wouldn't put it in the ground as the RHS rate Phoenix as frost tender. A lot of gardeners have lost Palms over the last few Winters.....you don't want to be one of them. It will take some time for the Palm to look better so don't give up on it, a few weeks of warm weather and it'll start looking happier!!

I`ve got one myself , in perfect condition , but lost 2 in the past years , my neigbour had a 2 feet trunk one in the garden and they lost after a -10 frost , the only big one I`ve ever seen in UK still alive it was in London , where temperature never reach more then - 5 ......try to get them as big as possible before planting them out or you need to protect them from winter as they are supposly only hardy to -5 unless big .
Be very carefull with water , If the water dasn`t dry will kill the plant in cold condition .
I`ve repotted my one in send/grit and bit of compost

Mine doesn't look too good right now, there were a couple of nights of -10C and even though I had put fleece over it I think it's had it. Thats the second one I've lost over the years, they are a lot tougher when they mature, there is a massive one on the coast at Southsea:

You'd need a big pot for that!!! Do you know how old it is, John!

It was planted in about 1995 I think Armandii, here's a photo I took in 2003 when we used to have a flat there looking out over the Solent to the IoW:

Only 17 years to get to that size.....wow!! I'm glad I've only got 3 trees in the ground - two Conifers and a Acer Brilliantisismum! I'll still keep my two Phoenixes in pots as I just don't trust our British Winters to be kind to them.

Gave it some warm water today. Was pretty warm today in the greenhouse. Still trying to persuade the other half to let me bring it inside :wub2:
If not I think I'm going to repot it in a slightly bigger pot in april and then put it in the soil in its pot in may on the front garden
