Hi Stuart and welcome to the forum. As far as I know a multi-purpose compost should do, one containing John Innes would be the best for a container.

I hesitate to agree with you John:biggrin:
With a bit of added grit if its likely to spend Autumn and early winter outside, and some Osmacote controlled release fertiliser or similar.

I've had a Phoenix canariensis for about 4 or 5 years and I potted it up with a mixture of grit, sand and general purpose compost, in which it seems to be quite happy. The question is, Stuart, what size pot is it in already and how long has it been in it??
I would not, however, take the chance of leaving it out to brave the severe Winter cold we've been having recently. Mine, along with the other Palms, Bananas and Cannas comes into the Kitchen area for the Winter.:snork:
