IMG_0289.JPG IMG_0288.JPG I have been putting food out for my visiting hedgehog every night for months hoping to get some photos of it.Well the other night I couldn't sleep so decided to do some net surfing instead.Heard a clattering outside the lounge windows and went to investigate and this is what greeted me.This one is smaller than the one that used to visit and I think it might have Lungworm as it has a terrible rasping cough and sounded like it was trying to cough something up.I don't think it is going to survive the winter:sad:

For a long time we've never had a hedgehog in the the garden or neighbouring area, last year we had one and seen a few up the road when walking early mornings, now we have 3 every night one which is white in colour :yahoo:the worst bit is i'm seen 4 dead ones on the road  dew to being run over

This year i made a house for him/she and i'm hoping they will use it to sleep in

Aww, are there any tablets for lungworm that you could crush into his food?

Nice photos, just hope it avoids a grizly death at the hands of the local badgers.

@Zigs the only way I could get those drugs in him is through either a vet or rescue centre. The problem is I never know what time the hedgehog is going to visit it was just a chance I heard him out there.I turned on the porch light but couldn't get a lighter photo of him with my iPad:snorky: .

What you also don't see in the photos is the little black cat to the left of the photo that was trying to nab the hedgehogs food while he was curled up in a ball and I ended up getting quiet cold as I was in my Jim jams and had the front door open as I was down on my knees trying to get it to uncurl and in focus:snorky:

Thanks for all the comments and I also hope either a badger or a car doesn't finish him off now that they are getting quiet a rare species and I think in the end we shall only see them in Zoos and Safari Parks:snorky:

Some vets seem to like wildlife, others see it as a drain, especially if you don't want to PAY.:frown:

Hardy ever see a hedgehog these days, last one I saw was flat in the road, what annoys me most is when you see them run over on the likes of hatched areas on the roads.
Its fairly obvious that a driver has swerved in order to run it over.

But dont see many these days at all really.

Yes things aren't too rosy for Hedgehogs these days. I wonder @Kandy if you have a rescue centre near you? If you do you could maybe phone them for some advice if you think it isn't well. Difficult to tell but it doesn't look very big. I know that Hedgehogs have to be of a certain weight before they can successfully hibernate. If they are too small they don't have enough reserves to make it through the winter. It's a pity you don't live close to me as I support a wonderful Hedgehog sanctuary by selling Snowdrop on the likes of Ebay. The old boy that runs it would be happy to take the Hedgehog and if necessary feed it up until it was fat enough to be allowed to hibernate.
Good to see tho that you are feeding yours cat? food. The ones in the sanctuary are fed both dry and tinned cat food, think dog food is ok too but not bread and milk which many people think is what they need. Hope the wee soul makes it.

IMG_0292.JPG IMG_0381.JPG Hi @silu they have to be 600gms to be able to survive over winter and I definetley don't think it weighs that much.

I found two, years ago each a day apart heading for a dual carriageway so had to fit them in the top box of my moped that I was riding at the time. After I found the second one I named them Holly and Ivy as it was November time and I kept them in the conservatory where we used to live in an old rabbit hutch. It was ok but they didn't half pong as they always did runny poo's and because of their diet it never smelt nice.:eeew: I had to wear Marigolds and scrubbing brush for their use only and they needed to be cleaned out practically every day so I got through a lot of newspapers.I released them in the spring when they were a lot bigger but was glad to say goodbye to them:heehee: They never did hibernate as they were too well fed.I have photos of them somewhere up the loft as we didn't have digital cameras in those days. We also have been members of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society for the last 36 years though it doesn't seem to have done much good if they are going to be extinct soon:sad:

We do have an animal sanctuary in one of the towns near us but unless I can find it again,I can't do a lot about it.

That is good of you selling the snowdrops,as it all helps:smile:

This is what he is eating at the moment and this is my adopted cat.The black one comes scrounging for food until Davina sees it then she chases it off of her territory:snorky:

IMG_0312.JPG IMG_0313.JPG Well I finally caught him/her at the 2nd attempt this evening so quickly got the cat carrier and put him in it with some food after I had weighed him.He/she is under 600gms so tomorrow I am going to ring round to see if a rescue centre will take it on and look after it as I think it isn't going to survive the winter as it is on the low side and I think it might be running out of time:sad:

He/she is in the cat carrier in the conservatory noshing the dog food and I have sprinkled some dried wire worms on top as some extra protein.:snorky:

I have seen 3 this year, the first was badly injured and heading on to the road, lifted him and carried it round to the local hedgerow, where it eventually disappeared into :cry3:. the 2nd was on my lawn in the middle of the night, :hapydancsmil:, the 3rd was dead.
