    Hi,

Used Microsofts default Photo App and find its layout just what we need to view our Pictures folder etc.

However a month or two ago it would only display greyed out boxes as below.
Thought a MS update might caused it, so waited for the next updates but no change.

If we goto any jpeg in any folder via file explorer and then tell it to Open with photo it does display normally with the Photo App ?

We can view you main Pictures folder with other programs like InfanView , so seems the photos are all good and intact.

We have followed MS advice on how to uninstall and reinstall the Photo APP via PowerShell but no effect ?

All our pics are on our hard drive, not in Onedrive etc.

    Any solutions ...?

Is there an option somewhere about previews?

      Hello @ricky101

Check your Thumbnail Preview Settings in File Explorer, apparently, Later Versions of the Photo App etc. take their Preview Settings from there.

        Thanks guys,

        - is this what you mean about FE settings, as below, its the only one we can find, even Reset all the FE settings, but nothing has changed.
In FE when clicking on a jpeg from a sub folder in the Pictures folder it does preview it on the right of the screen, double click and it open it up in the Photo App, yet just greyed out if we view it direct from the Photoapp ??

Connected up an external backup drive that contained a copy of the Pictures folder and the Photos app would read them ok.
Copied that folder onto drive C , but with a different folder name and tried to open it from the PhotoApp, but again all greyed out, so as you say it must be some system setting but not one we can find ?

Hi @ricky101 If the external hard drive was an old system drive from another PC, it may be a file permissions or ownership issue, depending on how they were copied. Check folder Security settings in file Properties, which should look something like this:

Use a different app? What does the web say? Is @BobTG on to something?

@ricky101 In case you haven't solved it, this applies for Win 11 but I assume that WIn 10 has similar as it gets still updates (with the target to get Win11). It's from January this year:
