Stupid Question but can I assume that if I lost all of my pictures on my computer by some almighty crash that the ones on Photobucket would be safe? [IMG]

It's a little bit of a safety measure! T'other half has now bought two sticks and I'm thinking about getting one for my photos, just for that extra bit of security.

I bought one of those "sticks" as a safety measure and they do work, but I filled it almost immediately with only a fraction of the photos I have on my hard drive. So now I rely on CD's when I remember to save them.

If you have got that many Hornbeam, have you thought about getting an external hard drive, hugue amount of memory, easy to use and totally independent of course! Also not that expensive these days. ;) ;)

I have a slave drive connected up for all my data plus any important pics are on the website.

My working drive (for the programs) is 40GB but the slave (for the data) is 160Gb with 2 partions.

External drives with a USB cable are slow even with USB2 whereas the slave goes like muck off a shiney shovel :D

Not good at the technical side of things but I put my pics on a DVD, you can get masses more than is possible on a CD.
    Best part is its cheap.

Slave drives and DVD's - hmm you've given me something to think about there.

All my pics are taken in RAW format so use a LOT of space. jpg is more ecconomical but means you loose the original definition if you want to rework the pic.

Just checked on evil bay, 160GB internal IDE hard drive will set you back about £50 incl postage.
400GB internal SATA comes in at £135 incl post. Scratching around a bit more you can probably better that

If going that route make sure you get the right type to suit your motherboard though. An older motherboard with IDE only (like mine) will not support SATA. You may also have to tweak your BIOS to recognise a slave.

For valuable data it's advisable to use at least two different media for storage so the DVD is a good idea. (How did we ever get by on 5.25" 1.2MB floppy discs? :D )

Thanks Frogesque. I am a computer dummy so will have to get my local computer shop to do it all. My new computer can make DVD's but up till now I have only burned CD's. I'll go down the DVD route first and see how that goes. What I really want is to be able to save photos to an external device and remove them if required.

Rodders: to get back on topic. Photobucket regularly purge pictures so I wouldn't rely on them for achive material. Always better to have something 'hands on' like a CD or DVD etc.

    Hornbeam:

If you can live with the slower speed then an external USB 'plug and play' drive might be a better option than taking it to a shop  . My pc lives without a cover on and its entrails kind of wander over the desk a bit so changing a hard drive is easier than lifting a Dandilion root. :D

Evening, frogesque! What do you mean that Photobucket regulary "purge" pictures? I've only been with them for four months and haven't had any problems ... what problems could I expect?
