Brought some Surfinia Plugs a couple of weeks ago, and I read somewhere that if you pinch the top of these, then it should give you a much bushier plant?

Just wondered if anyone has done this, or is it better not to pinch out the growing tip? (these are about 3 - 4 leaves high at present 20130406_110607.jpg )

Yes Intel you can pinch out the growing tip but I'd let the ones in the picture above grow on another one or two inches first. :)

      Hi intel.

I was a bit hesitant to reply as I'm no expert. I've heard it said before about pinching out Petunias, similar I believe. My own opinion is that if the plant is 'bushing up' and compact, there should be no need to pinch out. I think a lot depends on the conditions they are grown in. Plenty of light, but not too warm, difficult for us to supply. Hope this helps:)

I always pinch out , well actually use scissors , then once in the basket I pinch out quite a few times , you will double the flowers , they wont flower so quickly but they will last longer into the summer

Ditto . I'd pinch out when they are a little bigger than the photo . I then prune back about a third of the stems on growing petunias a couple of times during the season . To improve bushiness and to stop them getting leggy.

That's what I do. Pinching out puts the plant back a week or two, so I only do that if it isn't getting bushy enough by itself. Some do ... some don't :)

Sorry for the late reply..........I have a small pair of scissors that I once brought for pruning Bonsai Trees and that should do the trick :)

Reading from the replies, I guess its a matter of looking at each plant and experience will determine if it needs to be pinched out, I suppose that worst that can happen is, that you could put the plant back a couple of weeks.

I pinch out most everything including surfinias. Plants are much bushier, stronger and more floriferous.....and they flower better!
