Pineapple guava (Feijoa / Acca)

    Does anyone here grow them and eat them? My two shrubs have produced fruit for the first time in any quantity, which is lovely, but I don't have the faintest idea what to do with them :biggrin: The same goes for strawberry guava, Psidium cattleianum. As they're full of little seeds, I sieve them and add the purée to fruit salads, but is there a better way? TIA :)

    A couple of years ago I made a fair amount of wine with Feijoa being one of the ingredients, I didn't use it on its own as I find the almost perfumed smell and taste a bit over powering, other than juice I cant think its got may other uses although I think maybe thin slices on ice cream might be nice enough.
    I added it with figs, and also blackberries, or raisins.

    Not really grown Psidium to any great degree.

    These stranger fruits are stranger for a reason.:biggrin:

    I knew that I could rely on you two to come up with something alcholic practical :roflol:
    You've hit the nail squarely on the head, @pete. They all sound delicious in theory but usually have a (pippy) drawback.
    I suppose that's why smoothies are so popular....just blitz everything and hope for the best :biggrin:
    @CarolineL, I'm trying to restrict alcohol intake to a small glass of white per day. Not easy with all this potential cocktail material kicking about :biggrin:

      Try Googling 'feijoia mocktails', that produces quite a few non-alcoholic alternatives, some of which look rather nice!

          True....I have tried Virgin Mojitos once or twice when driving (not actually while driving, you understand :biggrin:). They were alright, but quite how a bar or restau justifies €8 for a glass of lemonade with a bit of crushed ice, a squirt of lime juice and a mint leaf is beyond me!:roflol:

              How about freezing them and using as ice cubes in your drinks? Frozen slices would also look posh in the rim of your shot glass.

              Or sell them and buy wine? Apparently you can get them in the UK for £2.40 each. :yikes:

                Wouldn't freezing destroy the lovely, delicate flavour, @Selleri? I have done that before when I had a surplus of limes and finger limes, which worked well but they're much more strongly flavoured. I'll try a few and see.....
                As for selling, my friend the agriculteur does a couple of markets each week, so he had a go at selling my Asiminier paw-paws, limes, Chinese jujubes etc. Much too exotic for rural France :roflol: Outside of the cities, the French are incredibly conservative when it comes to trying new products. Kiwi fruit are about as adventurous as they get :biggrin:

                  I froze mine before using them for wine making, but not sure how much flavour they lost in the process.
                  I haven't got any this year as I didn't bother cross pollenating and the sparrows have really got the idea of ripping the flowers apart around here now.
