I've done this when I was a kid, they got gown away though.

Hard to do nowadays as nearly every pineapple has had the growing point removed to prevent propogation :-(

It looks as though it will become quite an attractive small shrub and I love those glaucous bluey leaves Sheal. Nice for a tropical garden plant? Look forward to others' views on this :dbgrtmb:

Thought about it, but apart from the fun of growing one you need a lot of space. I think 3 years for a Fruit, and only one per plant ... we get through about one Pineapple a week in our house ...

I read a news article once that explained this. Trying to see of u can still find it on the web. If you look at the growing point of a pineapple top you will almost certainly see that it has been removed!

The ones we get from the Supermarket have the tops on ... or is it that the growing point, within the top, has been removed? (I've never looked that closely ...)

I think the supermarket ones have the growing point removed, possibly because it continues to grow once the fruit is cut, thereby taking moisture out of the fruit??????
Anyway they still grow, often from a side shoot which forms.

I used to play around with these and as Kristen said, it always took me august 06 186.jpg 3 yrs to get a fruit in my conservatory.
                This was the 2006 one.;)

If it takes three years to fruit I don't think I'll bother then. The above was something passed onto me by a friend. :)

I've got the urge to try again. I love fresh pineapple, just a shame they don't love me.
