Anyone ever tried growing a pineapple from a seed taken from a supermarket pineapple!??? (I was eating fresh pineapple the other day and intrigued that the seeds are sooo tiny! Just wondered if they'd germinate and/or come to anything!
Hi, I was intrigued by this, I've never seen pineapple seeds! I found this:- http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/bromeliad/msg1221581731333.html So you can grow them. I hope yours grow. What was really sad was the comment about humming birds being banned in Hawaii so that they can't pollinate the pineapples! I would sooner have humming birds and seeds, if I were them.
The tops will only grow if the growing tip is still in the centre. You need to look to see if it is still there when you buy them. Never actually seen any seeds in a pineapple MD. Do try to germinate some. I will see if I can find anything out about them. Intriguing...
Hi MD, Went & had a google & found these links. I have checked them & thay all work when you click on them.. http://www.floridagardener.com/misc/hgpa.htm http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/fv_planting_harvesting/article/0,2029,DIY_13828_2271079,00.html http://www.gardenbanter.co.uk/showthread.php?t=8921 This last link is the only mention I could find on growing from seed.. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/bromeliad/msg1221581731333.html It seems to me that you need warmth & light to get them growing. Good luck & tell us if you have success.... :D [ 17. January 2006, 10:52 AM: Message edited by: Marley Farley ]
I read in a earlier post that they will grow from the crown planted in compost although mine did not, perhaps I miss read the post
I've grown them from seeds and tops, I found the seed took three years to fruit and the top took two. Tops are easier and I agree with the links that say remove any fruit from the base of the cutting, it makes them rot if you dont. I root mine in a propagator, at about 80 deg F. Same for the seed, truth is I dont think I'd bother with the seed again. Just got another fruit coming, they seem to start to form down in the leaves in Jan. but with me its Sept. before they ripen. The fruits a bit small but very sweet.
Delicious, given me an idea. Honey bee can you use the same muffin recipe you posted but change the bananas to pineapples? Looks like I'm cooking again, sorry to all you weight watchers out there, your time will come to have a splurge lol :D
Ah, I put mine in ordinary, not sandy, compost with about 3cm fruit attached attempt 2 coming up having read links.
Who! what a lot of info! Thanks guys! Think I might try with the next pineapple I get! [ 24. January 2006, 09:35 PM: Message edited by: michaelmasdaisy ]
Hi all, This is a late follow up for a post, but I tried the pineapple tips from the links posted, and I think something has definitely gone wrong! I followed the instructions of the gardenbanter link "After trimming and stripping, place the crown upside down in a dry, shaded place for about a week (5 to 7 days) before planting. This will permit the cut end and the leaf scars to heal and prevent rot." I cut all the fruit off from the bottom, hung it upside down in a dry place, and now when I went to plant it up yesterday, a lot of the leaves have become discoloured and brittle at the tips (dehydration?) and the inner leaves, which look healthier began to fall out in great clumps with almost no forcing.. I've now got a very unhealthy looking outside, and virtually no inside! Anyone got any ideas? :(
