Hi all. Have used this site many times before to find sound advice for little issues i've encountered in the past and have joined as i have an immediate problem i really need some help with. I'm sure there will be many more to come so look forward sharing thoughts with everyone and learning more myself !

I have an outdoor wine grapevine which i have grown on from a hardwood cutting. I had decided to grow it on the south facing wall of my house on a structure of horizontal wires attached to upright wooden supports. I planned to train it using the Guyot method.

I pruned the stem back to three good buds but unfortunatly only two of them developed into strong shoots. Having all three shoots was essential as two would be pulled down to the bottom horizontal wire to produce next years fruiting stems and the third shoot would be the the one to be pruned back to give the replacement stems for the following year. Well, that was the plan. Have learn't cutting back to four good buds would have been a better idea ;)

So now i am left with two beautifully vigourous stems and one little shoot. Really don't want to start all over again by cutting one stem off and the other back to four good buds.

Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions ??

    Thanks !!

I don't know the correct answer, but when I have "training" problems I just take an additional shoot, the following year, to where I want. Ultimately the plant is supporting the required number of "branches" so I'm not sure it matters too much whether they original from the original stem, or some additional side shoots. But, as I say, I have no real knowledge on the matter.
