At the end of May I ordered three monarda plants (Cambridge Scarlet) from Crocus and they are doing fine and beginning to flower. But with them were two plants with a different leaf, doing even better, and one has just flowered. Can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks.

I think it might be the shoo fly plant Nicandra, or possibly Nolana.

Thanks very much, that is obviously it. An annual, crowding out the Monarda a bit so not really worth the space. I gather it may have blown in - no bird feeders near it - and maybe it blew into the plants before they were posted!

Thanks, yes. I forgot to add to my last reply that the calyces containing seeds are already there, I have now seen them on the RHS site. Short-lived flowers too!

I'm glad it came up as it stirred memories of the Nolana, I used to grow that for a few years and it was a good plant for dry ground, although back then I dont think it was quite as dry as we get these days.

We like them and find their seed pods quite attractive.
