Does anyone know what this plant is called please? It was given to me by a friend who couldn’t tell me what it was, just that it’s better in a pot as it’s prone to spreading. It dies down in the winter.
I do have a very similar looking plant, same white flower, same red stems and same shaped leaves, in a border. The leaves on that are not variegated, just plain green. It does spread. (I’m not sure how it got there, I didn’t plant it)

    Houttuynia

Can be very invasive in the borders.
The leaves have a citrus smell

Yes, houttuynia. I planted a single small plant in my garden in the spring/summer of 2023. In autumn/winter it died back, so I pulled it out, roots and all.

This spring I started getting a myriad of new shoots coming up, all around the area where the original plant had been!!

It must have underground roots which spread and lay dormant. I suspect as @Pete8 said, that it can get out of hand if not checked. It's nice looking enough though, colourful leaves and small white flowers.

Thank you to you both for solving the problem. I had wondered what it was called. The variegated one is very pretty, and I will be keeping it in its pot. I’m happy to know that the plain leaved one is the same plant, just a different variety. I will keep that one under control by pulling out the ones I don’t want.

Mine have spread all around one side of my pond. I pull up a couple every now and then to keep down a bit- strange smell which isn’t unpleasant but isn’t captivating either.
