Some I ordered arrived yesterday, a bit smaller than I anticipated. They are each in a 4" pot and stand about 6 -8 inches tall.
Would I do better to bring them on in a bigger pot or will they be ok going straight in the ground?

I would grow them on a while .Are they well rooted (meaning are the 4in pots full of established roots) or are they smaller liners just repotted into a 4in pot ?
If they are newly potted you could leave them as they are, or pot on to 5or6in pot otherwise .If they are well rooted and goingaround the bottom of the pot just tease the roots a little at the base before repotting.

Most Ceanothus are not very hardy. If they are small I would be tempted to keep them, and grow them on, in pots and then plant out in March next year.
