Planting snowdrops in the green

I've just received some snowdrops in the green. I know I have to plant them at the same level they were in the soil. The question is, how do I know? I've looked at them, and there's no way that I can see of telling how deep they were planted.

 

Aim to have half the top growth left above soil level, but it is not critical if they are less deep. Plant in groups too, for some reason they do better planted in 3's or more.

The blanched white bit will have been below ground. I read on a specialist snowdrop site that they should be planted so that the "fork" where the leaves separate should be at soil level.
