I have a shady corner by a north-facing wall that I have been struggling to fill.

    I bought a bunch of shade-loving plants

    Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears'
    Stinking Iris
    Cyclamen
    Welsh poppy
    Sweet cicely

These arrived in small pots (see photo). When using mail order, things always look a little smaller and unhealthier than what one would like.

Should I keep them in these small pots for now, repot in larger pots, or put into the beds directly?

Is there any special advice about growing these? Are some better suited to the shadiest spots and some more demanding of light?

    Many thanks

Generally, I would pot on into bigger pots for a few weeks, so you can give them some extra tlc before planting out.

I’m sure the experts will be along soon, but welsh poppies (have a bit of a tap root so would need a tall pot if you’re potting on) cope with most conditions, sun or shade....

      Hiya Kon :)

I would pot on too ....it’s what I always do.....before planting out in the autumn but these are pretty vigorous plants so if you choose to you can plant directly into your garden. I think small plants look a bit lost if planted out too soon though

However, the Hosta is one of the smaller types so I would plant it in a container using John Innes. It is a lovely little Hosta and would look good in a small terracotta pot I think to make a feature of it

They will all grow well in shade.
