please can this be identified

    hi everyone iam posting this on behalf of my dad, who has just returned from holiday to find the whole of the garden invaded by some sort of weed.please can someone tell me what this is,and how can it be treated.
    hope the pictures can shed some light on this.

    It looks like chickweed. If it is, then pull it out and get all the roots. Good luck! How long was your Dad gone for???

    Yes looks like chickweed to me as well. It could well have been little seedlings when he left. It grows really fast in damp weather, it will also grow in damp mild spells in winter.
    At that size there is nothing for it but to hand weed, it comes out easily enough. If the soil is dry then regular hoeing keeps the little seedlings down.

    hi, thanks for the quick replys.i'll let him know.my dad was on holiday for 3 weeks,and he said it was not there before he left.me knowing absolutly nothing about plants thought it was just some thing he had planted [​IMG] [​IMG]
    it has'nt stopped raining here in manchester for about a month,so the damp weather may have some thing to do with it.

    I agree that it looks like chickweed. There is no problem in pulling it out by hand but tell him to do it fairly soon before it flowers. The flowers set seed very quickly. The seed is a favourite of baby birds - probably why it is called chickweed.
