    Hi,

I am a new member and never done the chat room thing before!

I have had a money tree for about 10 years (the only plant I have ever kept alive for more than a month!) And over the past month or so it seems to be dying, it has lost 80% of it's higher up branches/shoots - they look dried up and very odd.

I put it in a bigger pot with new compost and have watered it a lot, and removed all the bits which looked very dry and dead, but every time I look at it, the dried up bist are spreading.

Sorry if I am not explaining this very well???

Any help would really be appreciated, many thanks.

    Sam

A picture would help, anyway I take it this is a house plant and not in a greenhouse.
Could be that you are watering it too much, and the roots have rotted, especially as you've repotted it as well.

    Hi Sam,

They don't tollerate over watering but I don't think that would make it shrivel up.....the only thing I can think of is if it has been close to a window and may have got too cold or even frosted, there aren't any little tiny aphids on it are they?

They do root easily from cuttings so as a bit of insurance you could cut a healthy piece off and use it as a cutting to grow a new plant...if it is frosted then once the shrivelled bits have been taken off it should recover

    Hi Steve,

I am struggling to use this chat room facility and you may all get my replies 10 times or not at all!

I have just taken a few snaps of the tree and I'll try to add them on now....

It has always been indoors, and quite warm.

I did stop watering it for a week or two, but that didn't seem to help?

I'd say its struggling a bit as far as the light is concerned, they really need strong light, with a bit of sunshine for part of the day, especially in winter. [IMG]

    [IMG] Hi Samantha,
I think I would agree with Pete that it needs more light & may be suffering from overwatering after the re-pot. They like well drained compost, I do a mix of my own, but you could use a ready mixed one for cacti, I found that sucessful in the past. Definately move yours to a lighter position for a few weeks & see if any new growth appears & let it dry out quite a bit before you water it next.I have one that is 16yrs old now & lives in the green house. It is in flower now, I will post a pic if I can, [IMG]

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for all you help.

Pete - thanks for adding my photos on, I am not cut out for these chat room websites, I can build you an ecommerce website but I can't navigate this one!

I am having building work done and the money tree has been dumped in a room, along with paint, wood and power tools. It has not really been in the light, so I will rectify that immediately and keep my fingers crossed.

It is very hard to get direct sunlight in my house, but is that the best, or will just being by a window be enough?

How long should I leave it before I water it again?

If I had a cat I'd probably have blamed it for damaging the money tree, but my dogs are both girls so they can't be blamed for peeing in the pot!

The long branches have dried up before dropping off, so I can't lay the blame with the dogs chewing them eitherLooks like it is down to my gardening skills???

    Kind regards,

    Sam

P.S Pete - I am glad that you think that Dolly (my black and white dog) looks like a Dalmatian, as her micro chip info form the RSPCA said that she is a spaniel cross????
