    Hi all,

PLEASE, please, please can someone help me. I have recently sewed some wild flower seeds in my garden which are now starting to appear. However one of the shoots which has appeared looks almost vine like and is now not only where the seeds were placed but appearing everywhere and I have no idea where it is from other than the seeds. Can anyone tell me exactly what this is as it is starting to appear all over my garden!!!! Please see attachment

    Thanks so much

    Miss FC x

    Hi there

Oh dear, yes, definitely the dreaded bindweed. For a thug, it has very pretty white trumpet flowers but it probably isn't quite what you had in mind when you planned a wildflower garden. Its roots (pale white-ish runners) spread quickly, which is why it seems to be springing up everywhere. I now have it in one of my borders, courtesy of the neglected buy-to-let next door. I have decided that chemical resistance is futile (for the bindweed, at least, although I'm sorely tempted to chuck something nasty over the absentee landlord). Weedkiller might cure things for a while, but while the horrible thing is lurking on the other side of the fence, the best I could hope for would be a very temporary reprieve. however, I find I can keep it in reasonable check by digging out any roots that I find and yanking out emerging shoots as soon as they appear.

Take comfort in the fact that there are far worse things than bindweed. A lady a few doors down from me has recently discovered that the interesting bamboo-like plant which is luxuriating in her garden gravel is in fact Japanese knotweed. I wonder whether it is time to move.
