Hello all, im a new gardener, and have just laid new turf today. there is sand, then topsoil on top and then the rolls of new lawn has been laid. I just have a few questions and any advice would be greatly appreciated. I bought the rolls from B&Q today, but some of the rolls was different shades, i mentioned this to a worker there, and they stated that this is because there seperate pallets, but are exactly the same grass, will this all blend into the same colour?? I went and bought 7 rolls, but was 3 short so went back but that was a new batched pallet. I was assured this was as i said because the lighter grass was off the old pallet, and the darker shade is new in today. Im very worried that this will stay these shades, also will the lawn knitt together? I have watered the lawn just afterwards, and will do twice a day. Ive also newly built the pond aswel. I will try and upload pics. Im a new member and will be spending a lot of time on here, great site.

    Hello and welcome.

The pale grass will darken to the shade of the other. It has gone pale because its been deprived of light for longer while it was waiting for someone to buy it. Unfortunately that also means its a bit weak, half starved. It will need looking after carefully. There are folks on here far more knowledgeable about lawns than I am, but I'd suggest just keep it well watered (but not drenched) for the next few weeks, and try to keep off it.

Hi Kirk and welcome to GC.

Don't worry about the different turves being slightly different shades. As soon as a piece of turf is rolled up after lifting, the grass starts to lose some of its green colour because it is no longer getting any light.

So the paler looking turves have simply been rolled up for a few days, while the greener ones are freshly cut. The pale ones will soon green up again now that you've unrolled and laid them. Within a few days you won't see any difference in colour.

At this time of year, the turves will start to knit together and take root quite nicely after about 3 or 4 weeks. The crucial thing is to make sure you don't allow them to dry out at any time, otherwise they will shrink and then they won't knit together so well.

As for watering, one good soaking a day should be enough, unless we get any really hot and dry weather, in which case a couple of times a day may be required.
