plum tree

hello
i Bought a Victoria plum tree in February from a garden centre and my neighbour bought one the next day I poped around to see how hers was growing I had a shock she had loads of leaves
But I had none !!!
Went back to g/c he said it was frost dead ?
Anyway they had no more so today I have ordered one from a internet site
I planted the tree in a old dustbin filled with top soil and compos
Why did mine die
I must say for weeks it has been weeping dark oil very sticky
So I have I killed it or is the soil to rich ?
Any help please for when I receive my new plum tree in around 14 days
