Can anybody identify these plums please. Are they eatable?
It's a mature tree that was left in the bungalow that our son recently bought.

Purple leaf Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera?), assuming they have dark leaves. I tried some a few days ago and they weren't quite ripe yet, but a few of the yellow (green leaf) cherry plums were. Will post a pic a bit later on.

If those leaves aren't as dark as they seem to me, then it's a Mirabelle (AKA Myrobalan) Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera again), more commonlu used in hedging than for individual trees.

Both OK for eating, jam, pie filling, use in chutney and making wine.

I pick wild mirabelle - they are very tasty and make great jam - lots of pectin so it sets well

        Just updating.

The plums were very sweet when ripe and the tree was absolutely
laden with them and we decided to pick them at the end of the week
but we never got to eat any because within a matter of hours the birds
        ate every one of them!!!

Are you sure it was birds and wasn't the local jam/wine makers/me?

I've never known birds to strip cherry plums as they do with cherries, and the overipe fruit just falls to ground.
