I'm intending to build a bookcase over Christmas break and need some advice on the best type of wood and finishing. It's going to fill an alcove (3.3m long X 2.4m high) needing around 40 shelves in 5 sections. So to save time I'm hoping to get a wood merchant to cut the exact sizes, then all I have to do is join it.

Has anyone used a 'cut to size' service or can recommend a reliable merchant, google finds this sort of website, but I don't know them from adam:
    http://www.avonply.co.uk/Precision Cutting.aspx

I'm also confused by the types of plywood and quality codes. I think I need something like a Birch BB/BB which I think means a reasonable quality. I'm not too worried about the face veneer as the books will be covering them, so my concern is the quality of the cut edges that will be on show that matter. There seems to be a big price hike between the basic stuff in B&Q and the better quality online.

Sag - with the weight of books I don't want them to sag. I reckon even 18mm will sag over my shelf width of 800mm. So I'm thinking it should be 25mm thick which will look nice and chunky.

Finish - varnished or stained with the ply edges sanded like this (although mine will be flush with no curved corners), but what type of finish? I don't want to varnish it if it makes the books stick to the shelves.

Any tips or recommendations gratefully received.

I want it to look something like this, (only mine will be in an alcove so the end side panel won't be on show):

I can't comment about the type of ply John. The last ply I used was marine quality stuff that I was given.
As far as regards finish, I'd go for polyurethane satin finish varnish and apply a couple of coats. It will dry quite quickly and there's no chance of books sticking once dry. Although even 'clear' varnish will darken the final finish, if you want an even darker final colour you could first apply a wood stain.

You could put some wood moulding along the edges to cover them which could look very nice, you could probably cut this to length yourself, the books won't stick to the shelves once the varnish has hardened off properly, I wouldn't use coloured varnish which has stain added to it as it never gives a good finish, always streaky, stain first and then varnish with a clear polyurethane varnish. Should look really nice!!!

Birch ply is meant to be the better one to use so I have been told before in the past

JWK , Birch ply it`s really expencive and you need a professional sprayer to have that look , I use loads at work and my boss will not allow anyone to have any offcuts due of it`s price .....

what I can suggest to you it`s something much more economical and easy to do .

why don`t you use scaffolding boards?

they are about £1 per foot , and you can easily brush paint it or stain it
at the moment I`m doing few table for friends

or you can destress the wood with few color

To be honest, John, I wouldn't use plywood for a bookcase:dunno: for several reasons, one is cost against using wood and, two, also ply is more subject to sagging under the weight of books especially if you have too much unsupported length in the shelf. I like using wood and the look of it when it's finished.:snork:

An 18 mm birch ply would cost you around £50 if you are a tradesman while the scaffolding board at a minimum of 38 mm thick should cost around £40 for the same surface usually the board coming at £8 per 8foot x 9 inches wide ....

Where do you get your boards from? I'm having great difficulties at the moment getting hold of some more for my allotment plot. Especially at that price.

I agree with all of this! Every time I use plywood I vow never to do it again! "Real" wood is cheaper, looks better, is easier to work with and is stronger in the direction of the grain. The only drawback compared to ply is the width available.

I'm surprised that 25mm ply is think enough over that length, our shelves are nearly twice as thick. You must have lighter books than us, JWK! If it has to be ply, I'd recommend sticking on an edge banding as suggested by Val. I've never had much joy getting a tidy edge on ply.

Ah maybe I'm not being clear on my shelf dimensions, each shelf span will be 800 mm (with a depth of 250 mm) which according to the sagulator:

                        upload_2014-12-16_10-11-21.png

                        Looks OK to me.

Even with 18mm ply it's a sag of 0.77 mm.

I just changed the Shelf Material to "Spruce Pine" and the sag figures are nearly identical.
