The Poinsettia is reaching for the sky and starting to colour ready for Christmas ...

It is about 2.5 metres tall now and will reach about 3 metres. When it is in it's "rest" period (February-April) I shall cut it back to about 1.5 metres again.

Looks amazing out of doors! When you see a plant so closely associated with Christmas in this sort of setting, it makes you stop and think!!

Poinsettias are a large shrub in their native Mexico up to 10 ft or so with much smaller bracts. Our small house plants were specially grown by plant breeders in Holland in the mid sixties and have increased in variation in the last two decades. Genetic engineering now allows breeders to produce poinsettias in colours ranging fron orange through salmon to purple.
They are creating 'designer plants'. I still prefer the original red.

Anybody passing on Xmas more than welcome!

I shall keep you posted on the progress which is wonderful to watch.

Believe it or not, you guys in the mild places can grow them outdoors ... from the puny specimens they sell there ... they sell them here also! They tolerate mild frosts ... mine is in my "frost zone" as I call it.

This is the baby of the original. I got fed up with it and we dug it up, put it in a large pot for a couple of years, then gave it to friends. Albeit just "around the corner" from us, they get more frost than we do because they have land and are more open. Our current one shot up from a bit of root left in the ground!

More piccies will follow so watch this space!
