Please can anyone identify these 2 weeds? A friend of mine has 3 goats which are showing signs of being poisoned, maybe after escaping and being loose for a short time on common land. We don't know if it was due to these or perhaps hawthorn berries? Any help gratefully received. Lindyco

Hi the second one looks like achillea but I can't make out the first one. I have just looked up and yarrow (achillea) is poisonous to dogs, cats, horses. So probably also goats

Strange perhaps that a plant could be poisonous to goats, taking into account that similar to pigs. They will eat almost anything, meaning anything.

Basically it may be said that all plants are poisonous in varying ways. In respect of animals, they have perhaps better senses than us at times. Ragwort and Dock are bad for horses and others. Thankfully, animals have the sense to usually make themselves vomit up any such, possible unsavory plant etc. Then they tend to remember and should they venture across the offending plant etc again, it's as if their alarm bells go off. I think you will find that the misfortune for any animal to ingest a poisonous plant. It may make them ill for a few days. Thankfully their stamina is such, that they recover.

The point I mention of most if not all plants are poisonous. There is a book. Dangerous Plants by John Tampion. Well worth a read. We should remember that. Using the term Poisonous, really covers a wide area of science. Some poisons can kill you in seconds, some make you so ill that you never fully recover. Poisons can also be included in Toxins etc etc.

From the veg patch. Spuds, belong to the Solanum family. Deadly nightshade, Belladonna etc. Poisonous. The humble spud. The hulm, ( the plant above ground) poisonous. Spuds-tubers that have become exposed above ground and are Green. Poisonous. That favourite, Rhubarb. The reddish stalk yummy. The leaves.........poisonous. The toxins in the leaves are so powerful. If you have a well stained saucepan. Boil a couple of rhubarb leave in it. It will sparkle like a diamond. That welcome to Spring, the daffodil. The latex kind of sap from the stems, highly toxic. Even that favourit the lettuce, it has toxic qualities.

Now Steward. My usual extra large Scotch and your best Pork Pie please.

I was fascinated with an old mag article that featured a gardenn kn your side of the pond wnere every plant was poisonous. I believe they called it a poisonous garden. Quite interesting. Was thinking of playing around with poisonous ivy. I'm not only susceptible but highly allergic. Spent a long stay at the hospital when I was young after contact.

Daring do and silly poo if I actually did it!
