A couple of years ago some not very wise people in our village decided they would refurbish our village Dew pond, because they thought it was in need of a makeover although apart from it going a bit dryish in the summer months was still capable of being home to various wildlife creatures.:thmb:

Anyway, another bright person decided to add some Goldfish as their children no doubt had got fed up with their pets,so thought it best to dump them in the Dew pond, but as everyone knows we are going through a period of very dry weather and all that is left of our village pond is a few pools of water, the carpet that was used to line the pond bottom and breeze blocks were used to weigh down the carpet plus the decking area that is we think for families to sit on to admire the wildlife, but which now cuts down the size of the pond

Thursday evening after our walk we looked into the pond and noticed the Goldfish were starting to look a bit jaded.Friday morning and afternoon I carried over 5 litre bottles of waterbutt water to try and help them out but realised that it wasn't going to be enough and there was already some of the fish dying due to lack of oxygen.

When Mr Kandy came home from work we chatted about trying to help them so armed with a fish net attached to my mop handle,a container in which to place the fish we went over to the pond and spent three hours fishing {scuse pun}them out.Another chap came to help with a bigger net and he went off after about twenty minutes with two buckets full of fish for his new pond.

We had to keep going home to transfer the fish into buckets of clean water and then in the end we had to give up because darkness was falling,phew....

I am now going to put up the photos of the fish rescue,as well as a couple of photos of a leech{yuk}one of a few living in the pond....

Please remember, pets are for life not until you get fed up of them,as they can't stick up for themselveseven though they may only be goldfish, and it means that big softies like us have to come along to recue them.:flag:

All 205 of the fish that we saved have been placed with our local fish man who is a fish keeper himself and is going to clean them up and hopefully find new homes for them...

    Thanks for reading:)

:gnthb::yho: Wow Kandy & Mr K..........................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am gob smacked at how many f sh were in there....!!!!!!!!!! :yho: You did a magnificent job to save them & if the other chap has put them in his pond then OK... :gnthb:

:mad: It is extremely irresponsible of people to have done that "renovation"" to a dew pond as well, they usually have a history going back quite a few years too, never mind adding all the goldfish.....! So sad to see Kandy.. At least though you alleviated the suffering of the majority...!! Well done..!! :gnthb:

    Hi Marley,Thanks for that.:thmb:

I meant to put up this photo, but accidently put up the same photo of Mr Kandy twice:oops: This was the sate of the pond water and you wouldn't believe it but there are fish under all that filth. We had to keep emptying the water from out of that container and adding fresh to it while we were catching them and then had to rush them home every so often to clean them up and put them into fresh clean water:D

    Anyway,here is the photo...

Very well done, Mr and Mrs Kandy, for a wonderful rescue :cl-p::cl-p::cl-p: :ntwrth:

It's obvious that the people that did that 'vandalism' didn't check up on what a dew pond is and how it works. Apart from being unsightly the decking area has probably reduced the size of the pond below what is needed to make it effective. Also the carpet would be negating the filter effect that may have been there if straw had been used on the bottom of the pond - apart from any bad effects the chemicals that may have been in the carpet are having on the pond.

I can't understand what the purpose of the carpet was meant to be.

Couldn't someone from the local council have asked the Fire Brigade to top up the pond? There must have been a hydrant nearby.

 Good gracious Kandy, the colour of that water is dreadful...!!!!!! Poor fish... Shiney very wise words there, left alone Dew ponds work wonderfully well, but if humans interfere in such an unsympathetic way it is a catastophy as Kandy & Mr.K found found out...!! You should tell your local newspaper about it Kandy, it might highlight the problem & maybe make people think twice about doing such a thing again.. !!!

This is a brilliant site that high lites the decline of some of our wildlife & why....
