We moved into our house 18 months ago and the old apple tree in the garden gave us a bumper crop of apples, we didn't know what to do with them all! This year, although we had blossom there has been no fruit whatsoever. Also, the leaves don't look very healthy, they have brown patches on them and are very dry, I think they have been like that all year. I noticed that the apple tree in the neighbours garden looks poorly too with a lot of dead branches and brown leaves.

Could it just be having a year off or is something more sinister at work?

I will post some photos of the leaves tomorrow.

Many apple trees have a tendency to biennial bearing. You had a huge crop last year so this is probably the reason for no fruit this year. Wait until you see what the crop is like next year before taking any drastic action.

Could always get someone in who specialises in fruit trees I guess to prune it for best effect next year? I know its a cost, but im not expert enough to advise anything, just what my brother did with his last year, and its given loads of apples this year
