My baby Trachycarpus (2ft tall) is looking poorly sick :( I initially planted it in a sheltered spot, but hadn't bargained on fencing off the oil tank turning it into a wind-tunnel  It's looking very battered indeed, but more worrying is the paleness of it  I moved it across the garden to a sheltered spot about a month ago, but it hasn't improved....it looks very pale and jaundiced :(
Should I feed it or something??

They are not very good for the seaside, don't like alot of wind. Make sure it's in the sun and put some blood fish and bone round it and wait to see what happens. ;)

I'd also dig around the base and add a sprinkling of slow release fertilizer?

Windy, my cordylines were starting to turn yellow and I was told to use epsom salts (magnesium sulphate)which you can get at most chemists. It worked. Don't know if it's the same problem you have but good luck [IMG]

ps I'm in a very exposed position by the sea and I was looking to buy a trachy. If I do it'll be a trachy wagneriensis (don't think that's spelled right)as they have smaller stiffer fronds and are apparently much more wind resistant than the other trachys

Seaside conditions are the one big no-no with the Trachys - I'd go with T-O on that one.

Sorry to hear of your trachy problems, Windy - annoying that a change you'v had to make has caused it. Is there any way of screening it? Bamboo screen?

Interesting new avatar - not sure I like it as much as the last one, though.... maybe it'll grow on me! :D

Thanks guys [IMG] On closer inspection it is getting a new leaf, so maybe all is not lost. Will give it a feed and keep an eye on it [IMG]

Barneyb is right if you want a trachy and its a windy spot, windy, you need a wagnerianus.
I bought one may years ago and was told it was fortuei, it took me years to work out what it was.
The thing with palms is that with a few exceptions, they dont do nothing quick, so a feeding or a move or damage can take a while to show.
Think I'd leave it alone and just try to ignore it, its probably just looking for attention. :D

as some of you may remember, I wrote my trachy off last year, but as I was about to compost it, I noticed new growth around the roots, so I repotted it stuck it in the green house and "brown bitted" it - apparrently that means cutting all the brown bits off, so there was nothing left of it! at present there are about 5 new healthy leavs developing, so glad I did not give up on it.

Oh that's good Waco!! So even if it's a gonner...there's still some hope [IMG] [IMG] The problem is, all the things I really love won't grow in these conditions  I try to be sensible...honest I do...but sometimes the odd stupidity sneaks in  [IMG] The Trachy...the Mushy Basjoo....the... :D :D
