I wasn't sure where to post this thread, but here goes anyway.

Having bought bread today with poppy seeds on it made me wonder which type of poppy the seeds are harvested from. Does anyone know the answer please? :)

We use the seeds from 'opium' poppies (Papaver somniferum).

Don't believe that for a minute Sal. Someone must have spiked you, there is no way you could get heroin in your system from just the seeds.

    even find a little article
Poppy Seeds Can Cause Drug Test Failures « Broken Secrets

20 years ago I was sent home for drugs user...untill they find out that it was the poppy seeds . I was not even smoking or drinking at the time.
apparently the poppy seeds used at the time to make bread and cakes was all coming from Afganistan........and most of the lovely giant poppy we see around are derivates from the same poppy .

    Blimey Sal,

    Who would have thought it.

Most of the Poppies in Gardens are opium poppies, many brought back from the empire as ornamentals. But, as you say, just as laden with Opium in the seed pods. I was just amazed that there were detectable amounts in the seeds themselves.

As I understand it, here in the UK we don't get the conditions needed for an opium poppy to produce significant amounts of opium. I read somewhere that they need prolonged intense sunshine and sustained temperatures exceeding 35 degrees C. Of course we can grow the flowers here, I had loads in my garden last year, but they wont contain much opium.

I guess its a bit different when commercial bakers buy in the seed in bulk, and it maybe comes from wherever it is cheapest to produce in large quantities.

Yes my point is that the seeds are coming from poor country where they grow the poppys to produce heroin and the same seeds are sold to decorate our cakes and bread......same story with birds seeds , they are full of marijuana seeds or the 90% of plants fertilizer can be used like drugs as contain all the ingridient to produce sintetic drugs , time ago I`ve seen one of the most powerfull drugs sold in a garden center in form of cactus ...the peyote...
I tell you what , gardening it`s a finest art.

At a previous address, where the neighbour would regularly feed the birds, I once saw a mary joanna plant growing on the boundary between our two properties. It was literally just to say on my side, so I sprayed it with roundup before anyone else had chance to see it. Of course it could have just been hemp, the leaves are almost identical, given that the two plants are very close relatives.

Incidentally, Hemp is illegal to grow in the UK without a license, despite the fact that it contains no THC (the chemical that makes you high), and is actually one of the most useful plants we could grow, being good for fibres for fabric, and excellent for biofuel producing about 4 times the ethanol that oilseed rape does, requiring far less effort to grow, and capable of turning bad soil good.

    Very right and proper, too!

I would love to be able to grow some Mary Warner if only because the leaves are so decorative and a good clump would make a fine architectural statement.

Anybody been to the Poison Garden at Alnwick Gardens? It's a miracle anyone survives a stroll round the average backyard.

Yes, poppy seed in food can give a positive result on a drugs test but it would only be minimal. The drug would leech from the body pretty fast so a later retest would show negative - as long as you are aware that ingesting poppy seeds may have caused the problem.

A hair analysis test would be able to answer whether the positive test was only from poppy seeds - unless you had loads of them.

Of course, making poppy head tea would make you way over the limit :rolleyespink:. It's not illegal but I would never dream of recommending it! I'd particularly avoid 'Hens and Chicks'
