It's a bloody disgrace (again!!). Every time a gifted contract runs out they sack everyone. Then when the next contract comes along they beg compensation and extra investment from the government because ship building skills have been lost.

Hi Loofah I had many friends who when Chatham dockyard closed moved house and transferred down to Portsmouth.

It'll be very interesting if Scotland does get independence, and then England won't have a shipyard... The independence issue would have been a factor, however small, as if they had decided to close the Scottish ones, it would have given strength to SNP's push

This is a real shame, some of my close friends work down there having transferred when Harrier was cancelled in 2010. There's practically no manufacturing down south any more.

And if we need further military vessels? Apparently we can buy them from our friends in Germany or France. If, as good, well behaved poodles, we roll over and beg.

We keep seeing nonsense like this from this government - I just hope that everyone remembers it come the next election. So many defence projects binned (and in some cases binned at a greater cost than it would have been to follow through to the end, such as the Nimrod replacement), not to mention giving huge contracts away to contractors abroad when our own citizens are crying out for work (Bombardier for example).

Whist I understand that it is important to encourage the flow of trade through the global economy, surely that can be done whilst ensuring that our own citizens remain in work (and thus, remain as tax payers as opposed to being benefit claimants) :dunno:

Assuming of course that its not Germany or France that is out to cut our throats - - I mean, its not as though we have ever had any problems with Germany in the past........

Mind you, we live in a country where we are importing gas and coal, whilst losing the infrastructure and skills to produce our own; worse still, we are paying (handsomely) companies to build wind turbines to produce electricity, and then we are paying them even more to switch them off because there isn't the capacity or demand from the national grid, all the while financially raping our citizens with their fuel bills to the point that MILLIONS of people now have the choice between heating and eating.

But never mind, the rich shareholders and banksters are OK......

What gut wrenching news for the staff who will be losing their jobs . And just before Christmas too,

Well Pompey will suffer for a short year, then IF Wee Ecks plan goes ahead, Clyde will close and Pompey will have more ship building than ever before
Also Grangemouth, forty years old refinery, can up sticks to an almost brand new refinery lying empty in Hartlepool for sale at pennies
Leaving Wee Eck with no employment up here, and Americas OIL which can be pumped at less cost to Norway

              Hang in there Pompeyites

Government: "It's cheaper to build abroad, they offered a better deal than the UK so the UK is saving millions in the long term"
                UK: "So? "
This is OUR country, OUR jobs and OUR industry and the government is hell-bent on screwing the lot of us. Give the UK industry the work, reduce the unemployment and get the money flowing through the UK banking system via our UK workers. Dear Mr Cameron - PLEASE STOP GIVING AWAY OUR INDUSTRY!
