OK so my OH has said she want's something planted.

here goes with her description of it:

"It's a summer perenial - orange, yellow and red small flowers with around 6 petals, long thin leaves and relatively long stems on them - sweet smelling. the local councils use them on their roundabouts and public gardens"

there is a prize for the person that gets the right thing... and that prize is my eternal gratitude at restoring my sanity of googling red flower and hoping that eventually i find the right one!

i may even be able to rustle something in the way of a fruit pie in the summer if you live locally :p

    Wallflowers?
Would (roughly) fit the description in terms of flower colour and fragrance and having long thin leaves. Also still a favourite for parks and roundabouts with many councils.
Not really summer flowering or perennial though, it's a spring flowering biennial.

Blimey! Didn't expect to get it right first time. It was the only flower that readily came to mind based on the description.

You will now be able to impress the OH with your extensive knowledge of flowers based on only a minimal amount of information.

Be prepared though, the OH will probably be so impressed that you will be set further difficult ID challenges in the future. Fear not, we on GC are always here to help!

I can quite understand why you thought it was a summer flower, from what I recall of last year the weather was far more summer-like in April and May than it was in mid summer! :sunny:

(Don't have any plans to visit your part of the world this summer, but if I do I may well take you up on that pie offer!)
