Can anyone tell me if the green algie on the surface of my recently potted-on baby plants is ok or not. I tend to overwater all my pots as when I look at them they LOOK dry on the surface, but must have been damp inside.I gather that leaving them until they droop is not good, but otherwise how do you tell - I have hundreds to check -therefore can't realistically!!

Get a moisture meter and sample, say, one in ten. That should give you a good indication if they are getting dry. I lost a lot of hardy fuchsia cuttings that way, but the half hardy ones survived.

I usually pick up a pot and if it feels light then it needs watering. That's my method anyway [IMG]

If there's green algae on the surface, they probably don't need watering. You could scoop it off with a teaspoon, add a bit more compost and a dropette of water, and see how they do.
